Coffee in Melbourne has come along way since the over extracted espresso days where coffee was drunk quickly, ‘down the hatch’ style to avoid the lingering bitter after taste.
Now it’s a ritually, a daily must that many can’t go without. But it’s not a choice of espresso or cappuccino any more, there’s cold brew, pour overs, syphon, filter, AeroPress, a whole coffee menu.
It was around the 1930’s that Melbourne landed its first espresso machine and became popular in the 50’s with them being installed in cafes and bars. Now a coffee machine goes into a new venue once a week with Melburnians longing to get to the next new place for their brew.
But it’s not a choice of espresso or cappuccino any more, there’s cold brew, pour overs, syphon, filter, AeroPress, a whole coffee menu.
There’s lots to love about coffee in Melbourne, it’s not just about the drink itself, although the quality of our coffee is some of the best in the world, it’s about the time taken to enjoy it. It brings together old friends, new friends, mums, businessmen, new flames, it says thank you, welcome home and I’m sorry.
There are numerous coffee roasters in Melbourne that push one another to strive for great quality. You have to be the best you can be in a market where people expect great quality as the norm. That is just how Melbourne has become. Every suburb has their splattering of decent cafes or coffee offers, there’s just no room for sub par coffee. Our standards and expectations have been pushed high and we are grateful for it. We have built a culture that can’t be found in many places around the world, Melburnians will be forever seeking good coffee when we travel, a blessing and a curse.
